Upper Saddle River is a Borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 7,741. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 5.3 mi².
Upper Saddle River was settled in the 1700s principally by Dutch settlers who constructed mills along the Saddle River. The area was granted borough status in 1894 and remained principally rural until the 1950s. The suburban growth of New Jersey affected Upper Saddle River and surrounding municipalities, as the population quadrupled from 1960 to 1980. The population has remained fairly constant in the past twenty years.
Predominantly a residential community consisting of one acre lots, Upper Saddle River also contains a library, police station, fire station, ambulance corps, municipal hall, and three primary schools. Commerce and industry are concentrated along the town's western border along Route 17. Postal service is shared with the neighboring borough of Saddle River.

History
Upper Saddle River was incorporated in 1894 when it was basically a farming community consisting of Apple Orchards, Strawberry Fields, and Dairy Farms. As Upper Saddle River celebrated its 100th birthday, many things have changed. However, the quiet beauty of this lovely community remains as much a treasure to the current residents as it had been for the generations which have preceded them.
